History

The DeLorean DMC-12 story

John Z. DeLorean, a Detroit-born veteran of General Motors, founded the DeLorean Motor Company in 1975. Its only production car, the DMC-12, was built in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland, from 1981 – with a brushed stainless steel body, gull-wing doors and a rear engine.

Financial trouble closed the company in 1982 after just over 9,000 cars. The dream was over, but the legend had just begun: in 1985 Back to the Future turned the DMC-12 into the most famous time machine in cinema, and it has been a collector's icon ever since.

Is the classic car the same as the Time Machine?

No – it's a separate, original-look DMC-12. If you want the lights, smoke and time circuits, see the Time Machine.

Can you drive us in it?

We can't carry passengers. It's staged at your venue as a showpiece and photo car.

The gold DeLorean

On the same visit to the Petersen in Los Angeles, Nick found one of the rarest DeLoreans of all – a 24-carat gold-plated DMC-12. American Express offered 100 of them to cardholders in 1980; only two were sold, and a third was later built from spare parts. Same gull-wing shape as our classic DMC-12, just a little more shine.
